Online gambling ads can’t save ITV from turmoil

When gambling advertising was allowed on British television from September 1st 2007 one broadcaster in particular had cause to celebrate.

For ITV this was a highly significant ruling as it gave them a revenue stream which other channels would not benefit from in the same way and the BBC couldn’t tap into because of its public service mandate.

As the largest privately owned television station in the UK ITV with it’s recently formed extra channels sat back and watched the gambling adds and millions of pounds in extra advertising revenue roll in.

Of course ITV is the UK’s largest commercial public service broadcaster, watched by more than 80% of the population every week. The core channel, ITV1, is a mixed-genre public service channel providing a range of programme genres. ITV invests some £1 billion in programming every year, far more than any other commercial broadcaster in the UK.

However in recent years the channel has stumbled from one controversy to another as it has tried to introduce more gaming and quiz TV.

While the levels of televised gambling advertising have remained steady during the economic downturn the same cannot be said of other sectors and as a result ITV today announced that they are in serious trouble.

The station has announced that it is cutting 600 jobs across its businesses, and plans to make other “significant” savings.

The announcement came as ITV reported a loss of £2.7bn for 2008 after a huge write-down in the value of its assets.

About 150 of the jobs will be lost in Leeds with the closure of its Kirkstall Road studio, which makes programmes such as Heartbeat and The Royal.

ITV, which has been hit by a sharp drop in advertising revenue, also plans to sell the website Friends Reunited.

Excluding the write-down in the value of its broadcasting and online assets, Britain’s biggest commercial broadcaster reported a profit of £167m, down 41% on 2007.

Chairman Michael Grade said: “Current conditions in the advertising market are the most challenging I have experienced in over 30 years in UK broadcasting.”

ITV’s advertising revenue has fallen with the growth of niche commercial channels and the internet.

The company estimates its net advertising revenue for the first quarter of 2009 will be down by about 17% on the same period last year.

Blaming the growth on online advertising ITV chiefs may be more reliant than ever on the gambling industry to help them ride the current wave of economic depression.

Gaming Jurisdictions

March 12th, 2009
So just where do online gamblig games get played out on a person’s screen clearly but where is the screen information sent from.  Well the majority of online gambling sites are hosted offhsore for tax reasons.  We have done a quick rundown of the main locations or perhaps we should call them the most reputable locations.
Aldreney is the most accpetable and widely used of the gaming jurisdictions around.  They have a variety of bandwidth suppliers and severe rules and regulations as regards software testing.  There are no restrictions on where Alderney operators can take bets from. Costa Rica is regarded as being slighlty questionable, there are no software testing requirements for example.  As regards bandwidth operators have to deal with a state monopoly. Gibraltar is on the Uk white list as per Alderney, its another ginat in terms of the amount of market share it has gathered. Isle of Man is on the UK white list - respectable perhaps too severe in its application of a regulated approach meant that it was prohibative to work from this territory when they legalised online gaming some years ago. Kahnawake is an Indian reservation in Canada - due to the rights in the states for Indian tribes to use gaming to ensure the continuation of their traditions etc this is how the Mohawkes operate a massive server centre.  They are not part of the UK white list and suffered some loss of business as a result. Malta as its in the EU has been growing dramatically. This could become the biggest of the lot in time. Netherland Antilles despuite the name quite a stand up location with some good regulations. Panama sketchy details on this location only but regulations appear to be very light weight. Tasmania as one would expect is heavily regulated. United Kingdom the death knell for the UK was the decsion to charge heavily on taxes. Making the comparison between this location and Gibraltar and Alderney worthless.  Most major high street brands have lept their web sites off shore as a result.

Now to follow up the above offline domination CircusCasino.com has launched it is the online casino from Genting Stanley, to set things off they are giving casino players two chances to enter its upcoming landbased Poker Classic comp featuring a guaranteed poker prize pool of US $200,000. Alderney licensed CircusCasino revealed that the format for its Second Chance poker promotion is a first of its kind for the UK it allows poker players from over 40 land based casino locations in the UK operating under the CircusCasino, MintCasino and MaximsCasino brands a chance to qualify online. The SecondChance promo sees poker players who did not qualify through the land-based arm of the tournaments automatically receive another shot to make it to the Classic through an online qualifier. Online players who buy into a $200,000 Second Chance Monday night tournament will receive another go at a virtual competition if they do not get through. The no-limit Texas Hold’em qualifiers will run from October 30 to November 2 at the Circus Casino at Star City in Birmingham. Land-based players that did not qualify will get a free, second chance token worth $55 that can be used for a future online qualifier. ‘We have created a unique tournament, which allows us to offer both offline and online players a free, second chance to reach the $200,000 final,” said Peter Nolan, Managing Director for Circus Casino.com ‘We don’t believe this format has been tried before and it is a great way of showcasing both sides of our business by allowing players a free opportunity to play on our new Circus Poker platform. ‘Although we only launched Circus Poker.co.uk less than a month ago, as the UK’s biggest casino operator, we have tremendous heritage and, therefore, we are able to offer a substantial guaranteed prize pool for our inaugural CircusPoker.com tournament.’

U.S. public give online gambling the thumbs up

internet_casino_banner.jpgA poll held by America’s highest selling newspaper USA Today has indicated that the vast majority of Americans support online gambling and believe the draconian constraints placed upon it by the Bush administration should now at last be lifted. The Poll was prompted following a story published on Congressman Jim McDermott’s proposed taxation bill on online gambling introduced last week. When asked the question “Is it time to legalise online gambling? 97 % of those who answered said yes.
Experts have stressed however that the winning votes should be recognised as ‘pro regulation’ rather than ‘pro-legalisation’ as there is already wide acceptance in the States that, regardless of the law, online casinos will do

business in the country. The comprehensive result of the USA Today Poll inspired Golf legend Lee Trevino to speak out on what he preceives to be harsh laws on online gambling. He said ” We gamble billions of dollars in this country and the Internal Revenue Service doesn’t get a dime. Instead they spend millions of dollars trying to catch these people.” Last week Rep. Jim McDermott introduced a bill to Congress that will eventually help legalise and regulate online gambling. His plan has high hopes for the slumping US economy. The bill, if passed, could generate as much as $40 billion in additional tax revenue to the US Government over the next decade. “We have gambling on horses. All of a sudden we say you can’t gamble online. What’s that about? If we can take revenue from horse racing then we can certainly take revenue from online” says McDermott.

Humans Remain the Poker Champs

February 10th, 2009
In the much awaited poker match between man and machine, man proves that he is still the best.  At the start of this week, Ali Estami and Phil Laak (the Unabomber) took on the challenge of Polaris, touted as the poker computer program that would beat human poker players.  The “First Man-Machine Poker Championship” was held in a hotel in Vancouver, Canada and lasted for four rounds.  The result? Polaris folded after four rounds. The event was staged at the annual meeting of the Association for Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and a prize money of $50,000 was offered.  Of course, to these poker pros, this prize money is not that high.  It is, in fact, peanuts.  However, the stakes were much higher than the money itself.  Was a computer program supposed to beat the likes of the Unabomber? This concept is nothing new.  In fact, in games like chess, artificial intelligence has reigned supreme, beating the Master Kasparov.  Yet for now, poker seems to be man’s turf.  There is no doubt about it, poker is a bit more complicated than chess.  There are so many other factors that might have not have been incorporated in the creation of Polaris, such as poker tells. After the game, the creators of Polaris admitted defeat, but only temporarily.  According to Darse Billings, a member of the Polaris team and a former professional poker player, Estami and Laak played brilliantly.  Yet, he goes on to say that “I wouldn’t be surprised if we can beat them tomorrow.”  Just when “tomorrow” is going to be, we don’t know yet.

Poker in Germany to Take On a New Face

January 10th, 2009
Thanks to poker room PKR, poker enthusiasts in Germany are going to be treated to something new and exciting pretty soon.  As it stands now, the norm in Germany is that most people play poker on their laptops or within a small cramped room with bad lighting – stereotypical but true.  With PKR’s upcoming event, though, things are just as likely to change.
On July 22, PKR is set to bring the biggest and most glamorous poker tournament that Germany has ever known.  Billed as Poker in the Sky, this event is going to be held on the top floor of the Cologne Triangle.  Aside from the name – which brings about images of loftiness and high expectations – the building itself is an achievement for a venue.  Standing at 103 meters high, the venue is normally associated with exclusive corporate events and parties.  In a few days, it will be transformed to host what will hopefully be the biggest crowd to gather in a single day for a poker tournament. Poker in the Sky will start at 10 a.m. and will run till 8 p.m.  Organizers are hoping to draw a thousand players who will vie for the 200 seats in the main event.  Of course, there will only be one winner in the end.  Prizes up for grabs include a 10,000 euro trip to Mallorca, and Apple Mac Book Pro, an LCD flat screen TV, a PlayStation 3, and more.
